This Eastern Turkey Monasteries tour begins in the Northeast city of Trabzon and ends in the Southeast city of Van. Your journey will bring you through lush green mountains to the turquoise waters of Lake Van. Along the way you will view the towering twin peaks of Mount Ararat, wander through the ancient deserted city of Ani, and finish at the historic Urartu capital of Van. A Van breakfast special will cap off your tour and leave your taste buds dancing. Come explore the amazing monasteries found in the mountains of Turkey!
Arrival Day: Your tour guide will pick you up from the transportation hub of your choice in the port city of Trabzon and bring you to your hotel. After check-in and a rest, you can join your guide for a walk in a local seaside park where you can enjoy the Black Sea coastline view (As energy levels and time allows). From there, you will be escorted to dinner where your guide will be available to answer any questions you may have and share with you any information you may need for your trip.

Day 1 – In the morning, we will visit the city centre where you can get a taste of Trabzon’s Karadeniz culture. Next, we will continue to view the sites in Trabzon and the surrounding area, such as the Sumela Monastery, Aya Sofya Church, and Ataturk’s Villa. Then we will continue our journey and move on to Rize, an area known for its natural beauty and tea harvesting. You can enjoy tea in its well-known Botanical Tea Garden. We will then head to Ayder’s National Park where you can enjoy the fresh air, lush scenery, and cultural atmosphere of this mountain escape.

Day 2 – Today we will travel through the beautiful Georgian valley on our way to the regionally significant cultural city of Erzurum. Along the way, we will stop at natural and ancient points of interest such as Ishan and Osvank churches, and Tortum Lake and Waterfall. (Others sites may be included as time and interest allows).

Day 3 – This morning, we will visit the sites in Erzurum such as the Yakutiye Madrese, Ulu Mosque, Tas Han, Kumbetler, and Twin Minarets. From there we will continue on to Ani and ponder at the remains of this old, abandoned, yet fascinating Armenian capital. View the bridge connecting the old silk road from Ani. After our exploration of Ani, we will return to Kars to rest.

Day 4 – Today in Kars, we will visit the old citadel, the church of the 12 apostles, an ancient bridge, bath, and other buildings reflecting Russian and Baltic Architecture. Afterwards, we will head to Dogubayezit, an old city on the eastern Turkish border. Here we will view Mount Ararat and its mysteries, and visit an old Urartian castle and the Ishak Pasa Palace. (Noah’s Ark and Meteor Crater visit available on small tours and in season due to condition of road). On the way to Van we will stop to see the beautiful Muradiye waterfall.

Day 5 – This morning we will partake of the unique and much loved Van Breakfast. From there we will proceed to visit the sites located in the Van area such as the Urartian Van and Cavustepe Castles, the Kurdish Hosap Castle, and the famous Armenian Aktamar Church (on an island in Lake Van). We will also visit the Van Cat House, and check out the local silversmith who makes jewellery with the designs of the Urartian people.

Day 6 – Today we say our final goodbyes as we escort you to the local transportation hub of your choice in Van and wish you a wonderful and safe trip home.
